Surveys have been made from time to time.
of the stocks of stamps in the Post and Stamp Offices
and the main stock in the vault was surveyed in January
1895. On one occasion the Post Office stock was found
to be $5 short and this was made good by the Compradore.
In surveying the main stock in the vault, an excess
of one packet of 8 cent postcards and a deficiency of
one packet of 2 cent cards was found.
At the time the
Compradore was $5 short the 8 cent cards were 6 cents
only, the latter having been subsequently surcharged
8 cents, and the difference in value between one packet
of 2 cent and one packet of 6 cent cards being exactly
$5, it is likely that the Compradore was debited with a
packet of the higher value and received a packet of the
